Hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls
Hello!
I don’t have service in Grand Staircase. I woke up early again, and hit the road just about 3 miles to my next trailhead and what may have turned out to be my favorite camping spot so far! (but it’s only he 3rd day!!)
My hike today was to Lower Calf Creek Falls. Wow is all I have to say! Its a small, first come first serve campground, and you MUST arrive early to grab a spot, it fills up by lunch! But, since I camped 3 miles away on Free BLM land, I got there bright and early and since it was easily the prettiest place I’d ever seen, I snagged a great spot right on the creek next to the bridge that crosses to the trailhead AND the bathrooms. Change of plans, I’m not leaving after todays hike….score!
I paid, set up my spot quickly, and headed out on my LONG hike! This is a 6.7 mile, out and back hike that is probably the prettiest hike I’ve ever made! The elevation gain is about 521ft, and the trail is very well worn and clear. I follows the canyon and the creek all the way, and ends at the fall. The clouds rolled in and out the entire time, but when I arrived at the falls by 11am, the sun poked through and it was unbelievable, In May, it was still a little chili in the shade, but I ate a snack and enjoyed the falls for most of the day!
This is definitely a MUST DO hike if you’re in the area….You can park in the small parking lot and day hike, but I recommend you snagging a camp spot. I loved it here soooo much I decided to spend 2 nights in Escalante, and if I ever make it back anywhere close, I’ll be staying here again!
Next stop….
Bryce Canyon!
Tomorrow is Mother’s Day and its my first Mother’s Day without my babies….bittersweet but I’m sure Bryce Canyon will cheer me right up!
Best Part of today: Making the moderately difficult hike to the falls all by myself and seeing it for the first time
Worst part: Having to wash off my sweat in a spout with water trickling out of a rock
Thankful for open camping spots, restrooms and Lower Calf Creek Falls!
xoxo,
Andie
